High up in the clouds on the Nteko Ridge, on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, the views are breathtaking. In the shadow of three volcanoes, looking down into the thick treetop canopy of Bwindi forest and beyond to the golden grasses of the Western Rift Valley, lies Clouds Lodge.

A first in Uganda, this lodge was built as a partnership between the Nkuringo Community Development Fund (NCDF), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Wildplaces and the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) through the International Gorilla Conservation Programme. With the ultimate goal of protecting the natural habitat of the mountain gorilla, ‘Clouds’ will directly benefit the community of Nkuringo, who also have a significant stake in the venture.

Ten stone cottages each have fireplaces, soft armchairs and warm duvets, while the main lodge serves excellent meals made from local produce along with good wine, and has a lush botanical garden, cozy library and sheltered verandas with views to the volcanoes. Activities include mountain biking along the ridge, walks in the forest reserve, visits to the local community village and gorilla tracking. Full board accommodation includes all meals, drinks, laundry and local community fees.

Bwindi National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (331km) is situated in South Western part of Uganda, on the boundary of the Albertine Rift Valley, on an elevation array from 1.160 m to 2.607m. This is a genuine tropical rainforest, spread all over a series of steepest ridges and valleys. It is looked on one of the most biologically diverse woodlands in Africa. In the local language, “Bwindi” meaning “mubwindi”,“dark place” referring to the impenetrable nature of the thick forest.

Species:

There are 11 species of primates, including chimpanzee, the monkey variants such as Hoest’s, red-tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, and olive baboon.

Specially, Bwindi is home to 360 Gorilla beringei*, a half of the total remaining world population. There are 346 species of birds registered (Bwindi contains 90% of all Albertine Rift endemics, hard to experience in any other place in East Africa) and hundreds of butterflies. Mammals count only 30 (buffaloes, leopards, elephants).

Activities:

The primary activity is “gorilla trekking” to the accustomed 4 families of Gorillas. Hiking trails are open to people to sight birds, butterflies, and primates, trees (along the Munyaga, Waterfall, Rushura, River Ivi and Bamboo zone trials). Specially recommended for bird watchers are the River Ivi and Mu Bwindi swamp nature walks. There is also cultural walk to Buhoma village community, to see the traditional homestead, the local healer, the banana brewing, handicraft and cultural performance.
